Bulldogs Drop Close Match-Up to Auburn

October 07, 2022 | Equestrian

BISHOP, Ga. --- The No. 5 Georgia equestrian team dropped a close battle to No. 6 Auburn, 11-8 on Friday afternoon at the UGA Equestrian Complex.

The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1 SEC) collected two Most Outstanding Performer honors. Junior Nora Andrews was honored after scoring an 87 for her Flat ride and freshman Raegan Shepherd was recognized for Reining after scoring a 72.5.

"I am really proud of them," head coach Meghan Boenig said. "I actually think we made quite a bit of progress from last week. This is not the outcome we wanted to see today, and I really don't think its reflective of the ride and the quality that's in this team and that was displayed. Having said that, we know it's always going to be an incredible competition in the SEC and they gave us a lot of great rides."

Competition started in Horsemanship with the Tigers (1-0, 1-0 SEC) taking a slight 3-2 lead.  The Tigers won the first two points before Jillian Stopperich put the Bulldogs on the board with a 76-75.5 win. Auburn took another point then Sara Lewis finished the event with a 76.5-73 point for Georgia.

Auburn added to its lead in Fences with three more points to Georgia's two.  Jordan Toering won her ride with a score of 82. The Tigers won the next point.  Jennifer Staniloff added a point for Georgia after scoring an 81 for her course.  Auburn won the final two Fences points.

The meet was still within reach as the Bulldogs were down by two with Flat and Reining remaining.

Georgia and Auburn split the points in Flat, winning two each.  Nora Andrews started with a score of 87 for her ride before Jordan Toering matched her Tiger opponent's score of 87 to push the point.  Jessica Guginsky then scored an 80 to claim the final Bulldog Jumping Seat point of the day.

Auburn sealed its victory after winning the first two points in Reining. Courtney Blumer tightened the gap with a point for Georgia and Raegan Shepherd followed with the best score of the event- a 72.5 on Woody.

Georgia returns to action on Saturday, October 22 at home against Texas A&M. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the UGA Equestrian Complex.  Admission is free.
