ATHENS, Ga. - After a hard-fought match, the University of Georgia soccer team fell to Gonzaga, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in front of 1,104 fans at the Turner Soccer Complex.
Sophomore forward Tori Penn scored the lone goal of the match for the Bulldogs off a corner crossed in from sophomore forward Madison Haugen. The score was the first regular season goal of her career.
Both sets of Bulldogs tallied 16 shots, while Gonzaga led in shots on frame by a 6-5 margin. Georgia led in corner kicks with seven, topping the Zags' two.
"Obviously disappointed in the result, but more so disappointed in the fact that of the two teams we were in a lot of different categories today," said Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne following the match. "They kept the ball better than we did today, and I think they won a lot of the physical matchups to gain additional possessions. We gave the ball away cheaply and they were able to keep, and then physically they disrupted and won the ball back. So, in turn I think they created the better chances and put the game away in the second half."
In the 15th minute, Gonzaga's Maddie Kemp played a ball to Kelsey Oyler, opening up the final third for a breakaway, putting the Zags ahead, 1-0. Penn would tie the match 13 minutes later off Haugen's corner.
Gonzaga struck back twice in the second half to run the score to 3-1. Kate Doyle and Marissa Garcia were both assisted by Willow Collins at the 50th and 56th minute. Georgia continued to fight late in the second half as freshman forward Danielle Lewin just missed from 25 yards out in the 73rd minute, followed by a shot from graduate forward Mollie Belisle that hit the crossbar.
Georgia returns to the field Thursday evening as it takes on in-state foe Georgia State at 7 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free for fans and the match will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
