March 24, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
GREENSBORO, N.C. – With a school-record time of 6:12.34 in the 800 freestyle relay, the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team posted a tremendous start Wednesday evening at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The relay team of freshman Jake Magahey, sophomore Zach Hils, redshirt sophomore Bradley Dunham, and freshman Luca Urlando placed sixth in the event, earning 26 points heading into the first full day of competition on Thursday. The new record time bested the previous top mark of 6:12.54, which was turned in at both the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Championships.
Magahey led off the race with a 200 freestyle split of 1:33.17, the second-fastest time of his rookie campaign. Hils and Dunham helped move the Bulldogs into second place in Heat 5 with splits of 1:33.37 and 1:33.63 respectively. In the anchor leg, Urlando dropped a blistering time of 1:32.17, nearly topping NC State's Hunter Tapp for the heat victory. With the sixth-place finish, Magahey, Hils, Dunham, and Urlando earned First Team All-America citations.
The NCAA Championships kick into full gear Thursday with the first four individual events of the meet: the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 1-meter diving, as well as the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays in the evening session. Magahey carries the No. 2 seed in the 500 free, while redshirt senior Javier Acevedo ranks seventh in the 200 IM and sophomore Dillon Downing is seeded fifth in the 50 free. Senior Zach Allen will make his NCAA debut in the 1-meter springboard, ranking ninth overall on the seed list. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be available on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.
