No. 22 Georgia Falls to No. 3 South Carolina, 62-50

January 21, 2021 | Women's Basketball

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball team shot a season-low 33 percent from the field in a 62-50 loss to the No. 3-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks Thursday evening at Colonial Life Arena.

The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the No. 22-ranked Lady Bulldogs. Georgia falls to 12-2 overall, 4-2 in the SEC, while South Carolina improves to 11-1, 6-0 in the conference.

Seniors Jenna Staiti and Que Morrison led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points apiece. Staiti finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

"In my opinion, South Carolina is the best team in the country," head coach Joni Taylor said. "Give them credit. A lot of people talk about their ability to score, but they put a lot of pressure on you defensively, and that affected us tonight. We turned it over way too much and just gave them too many possessions."

Staiti scored four of Georgia's first six points as the two teams stay knotted up at 6-6 with 4:30 left in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs shot just 27 percent and committed nine turnovers in the first period, but still trailed by only five points, 15-10, going into the second.

Georgia went cold in the second quarter and did not hit its first basket until Morrison's shot at the 5:35 mark. The Lady Bulldogs hung close most of the first half despite shooting just 29 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

Down 30-18 at the half, Georgia was outscored 20-10 in the third quarter as the Gamecocks extended their lead. The Lady Bulldogs clawed back late in the fourth, but it was not enough in a 62-50 loss.
