Key Quotes

Head Coach Ayla Guzzardo

On the improvement on the defensive side...
"We were in gaps, our traps were hard, we were active on ball pressure. We made it hard for them to run a lot of their offense. I think we slacked a little bit later in the game. We got to clean some stuff like that up, but for the most part of the game, we forced 35 turnovers, 25 steals. That's a lot, but now we just have to capitalize on the other end."

On the hustle of the team...
"That's who we are; we're never going to be too big to dive on the ball for a loose ball. My big girls are doing, my guards are doing it, that's who we are. We are going to do the dirty work, we're going to play the right way, we're going to take charges, we're going to help each other up. That's just how we've been built, and that's how all these girls are."

On starting the game with a full-court press...
"If you know anything about us, when you get off the bus, we are there. We want to make your life tough. You know, every play has to be tough, but at the same time, doing that for 40 minutes is hard. You know, you might get us the first half, but trying to do that for 40 minutes; we're conditioned to do that, a lot of teams aren't."

On her impact on the win…
"It's always awesome being able to come into the game and make an immediate impact, but the game started off strong for us. Our girls went out there, they were getting steals. So, the energy was already there. I just got to come in and kind of continue that. We don't want any drop off from the bench, and I think when the bench came in, I think we were able to keep going with what the starters started."

On the importance of building confidence in non-conference games…
"Well, we know every night in the SEC is going to be a dog fight. It's the best conference in the country. So it's really important in these early games that we're learning, that we're understanding what we need to do, we're focusing on the things we can do better on to improve so that when we get to SEC play, we're ready for whatever comes to us."

On what impacted her successful night…
"Honestly, the energy, it's contagious. Our starters started the game off right, getting steals. Just sitting on the bench watching that, I want to come in and have that same type of contribution. So they set the tone today, and that's what we need so that when people come in behind them, they do the same thing, there's no drop off. So definitely, just what the starters started with, coming in and bringing that same energy."
