Georgia Battles in Loss to No. 9 South Carolina, 3-0

September 20, 2019 | Soccer

COLUMBIA, S.C.--- The University of Georgia soccer team fell in a tough battle to No. 9 South Carolina, 3-0, at Stone Stadium Friday evening.

Despite the Bulldogs' nine shots to the Gamecocks' 10, only two were on frame for Georgia.

"Difficult one for us," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "Obviously South Carolina's a really talented team. I thought we played fairly well in the first half, then were unfortunate to give up a penalty late in the second half which kind of turned the tide of the game. Again, we're going to be these battles and we have to be more effective in the final third. It came down to the battle of the boxes and I think they won the critical areas of the field where I thought our build-up play was good, but we weren't able to capitalize in the final third."

The Bulldogs defended the goal well in the first 37 minutes of play, keeping the Gamecocks (7-1) scoreless after four shots on target. South Carolina struck twice late in the first half, putting the ball in the back left of the net with eight minutes remaining.

Georgia (3-4-1) followed with three shots, two by freshman Tori Wheeler and one by sophomore Cecily Stoute, but was unable to capitalize.

South Carolina's second goal of the night came after the Gamecocks' Lauren Chang followed up an incredible penalty-kick save by goalkeeper Emory Wegener. Chang cushioned the lead again to go up three scores at the 50-minute mark.

Georgia was able to force seven corner kicks on the night compared to South Carolina's two.

The Bulldogs return home Sunday at 2 p.m. to celebrate Senior Day at the Turner Soccer Complex. Georgia will honor seniors Keely Cartrett and Daria Stan as the team takes on Furman to conclude non-conference play for the season. Admission is free.
