Georgia Drops Heartbreaker to No. 23 Texas A&M
October 08, 2017 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. --- After torrential rain suspended play for two hours, Georgia soccer dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 23 Texas A&M in double overtime on Sunday at the Turner Soccer Complex with a final score of 2-1.Â
Â
"It was hard-fought game," Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. "The effort our team put forward today was phenomenal. They gutted to not get this result and you can't take away their effort or how hard they worked in this situation. I'm proud of them."
Â
Georgia (4-9-1, 0-6 SEC) and Texas A&M (10-2-1, 5-1 SEC) played through the rain for the first 30 minutes of the game until torrential down pour suspended play with 14:31 on the clock in the first half. The scoreboard remained clean although both teams took five shots with three on target at the time of suspension.Â
Â
When play resumed two hours later, it was Texas A&M that scored first.Â
Â
Georgia scored the equalizer in the 41st minute when freshman Katie Higgins fired a shot from outside the box.Â
Â
The teams took a shortened halftime knotted at one goal each.Â
Â
The Aggies dominated the field offensively in the second half, taking 16 shots with five on target, but the Georgia defense was able to hold them off.Â
Â
Rain continued near the end of regulation in which Georgia took a total of 13 shots. The team added three more in the overtime periods, but it was not enough to defeat Texas A&M.Â
Â
Texas A&M scored the winning goal at the 108:20 mark when Grace Piper kicked the ball from 20 yards out to the high corner of the net.Â
Â
The Bulldogs continue SEC play on Friday, October 13, as the team travels to Knoxville to face the No. 21 Tennessee Volunteers at 7 p.m.
