Georgia Falls in Close Game at LSU

October 05, 2017 | Soccer

BATON ROUGE, La. --- The Bulldogs and Tigers were even in shots, but it was one shot on goal that made the difference as Georgia soccer fell, 2-1, to LSU at the LSU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

"It was a difficult end to the game," head coach Billy Lesesne said.  "There were many moments where we controlled possession and did not capitalize in the final third as we've had to deal with several times this season.  Then to get bitten with that counter-attack at the end is really disappointing and frustrating for our team."

After a scoreless 30 minutes of back-and-forth action between the Bulldogs (4-8-1, 0-5 SEC) and Tigers (8-2-2, 1-2-2 SEC), LSU scored the first goal of the game at the 34:24 mark as a free kick was finished by a header from Lucy Parker for the 1-0 lead.

One minute and 12 seconds later, Georgia scored the equalizer after a foul in the box gave the Bulldogs the penalty kick opportunity.  Sophomore Daria Stan booted the ball low for her first career goal.

The scoreboard was not the only thing even in the first half as the Tigers and Bulldogs each made three saves and were nearly matched in shots.

Georgia defense was able to neutralize the LSU offense for much of the second half until LSU scored the winning goal with four minutes remaining in the game.

Georgia and LSU were even in shots (11) and saves (5) to finish the game, but Georgia held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

"The beauty of this league is that we play another really good team on Sunday with Texas A&M coming to our place," Lesesne continued. "We have to rebound from this, both mentally and physically, so that we give our best on Sunday and play the way we are capable of playing."

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, October 8, when the No. 23 Aggies of Texas A&M come to Athens for a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m. live on the SEC Network.
