Sammy Towne joined the Georgia staff in 2022 after serving with head coach Keidane McAlpine for the previous four seasons at USC as an assistant coach. Following two seasons as an assistant coach, she transitioned to a new role as Director of Recruiting & Player Development in spring 2024.
Working primarily with the defenders, Georgia received its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2014 and hosted a home postseason match for the first time since 2007. The Bulldogs also upset Tennessee in the SEC Tournament, reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2010 before falling in penalties to eventual champion South Carolina.
During the season, Georgia went unbeaten on the road in conference play and finished the regular season with six straight results against league opponents, including the first three-game SEC shutout streak since 2010. The Bulldogs tied a program record with 12 shutouts during the year, all while tallying the second-lowest goals against average rate in program history. Graduate Abby Boyan became the program’s fourth All-American, with Madison Haugen, Dani Murguia, and Cecily Stoute joining her on the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team.
In her second season, she helped lead Georgia to a 13-4-6 record and No. 13 final national ranking, the highest in program history. During the season, Georgia won its first SEC East Division title, followed by the first SEC Tournament championship in school history, before reaching the Round of 16 for only the second time in program history. Under Towne's tutelage, the Bulldog defense tallied eight shutouts during the season and held opponents to a 1.02 goals against average. Freshman Kiera Staude was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and was ranked No. 33 on Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Freshmen of 2023.
With the Trojans, Towne helped guide USC to four top-four finishes in the Pac-12 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2019. USC posted 39 shutouts in her tenure and produced a First Team All-American in defender Ally Prisock (2018) and a Freshman All-American in defender Kaylin Martin (2019). While at USC with McAlpine and associate head coach Jason Lockhart, the three coaches were named as part of United Soccer Coaches’ Pacific Region Staff of the Year in 2018 and 2021.
Prior to joining USC, Towne served as Director of Soccer Operations for two seasons at her alma mater Auburn. Towne played for the Tigers from 2007-10, while McAlpine served as an assistant coach, earning All-SEC honors, and captaining the team. Following the end of her career, she served as a defensive assistant student-coach in 2011, helping the Tigers win their first SEC Tournament.
Following Auburn, Towne was an assistant for four seasons at UNC Greensboro, working with the defense and coordinating recruiting. With the Spartans, she helped produce nine All-Southern Conference performers, including three consecutive accolades for defender Georgia Brown.
Towne graduated from Auburn in 2012 with a degree in human development and family studies.
