Stinchcomb Brothers Never Planned On Calling Games

Whether you're watching No. 2-ranked Georgia's game Saturday against Western Kentucky on television or listening to it on the radio, you're going to hear one of the Stinchcomb brothers talking about the Bulldogs. Matt will be the color analyst on SEC Network's broadcast, and Jon will be doing the radio call on the Georgia Bulldogs Sports Network.
Both Matt and Jon are former Georgia All-American offensive linemen and former Academic All-Americans, and both played in the NFL. While Matt has been a fixture on TV in the fall for almost 20 years, Jon is in his first season doing radio for Georgia games, alongside new play-by-play man Jeff Dantzler and veteran sideline reporter DJ Shockley, the former Georgia quarterback, and this will be the first time the brothers have worked the same game.
What's funny about that is neither brother ever planned on getting into broadcasting. Matt said he never much enjoyed dealing with the media during his playing days, and certainly didn't think about getting into broadcasting after he retired from the NFL, while Jon kind of fell into it initially while he was playing for the New Orleans Saints.
"I don't think either one of us was like, Hey, one day wouldn't it be great if we could do this?" Matt said.
But here they are. Matt said his start came at the suggestion of longtime Atlanta media personality Sandra Golden, who encouraged him to look into it after he'd been a guest on one of her shows.
"She's really good, and has been forever, and she said just offhand one time, 'Hey, you know, you're pretty good at this.' And I'd never thought about it prior to her saying that," Matt said.
For Jon, his first broadcasting experience came when he was offered the chance to help call a game of the New Orleans Voodoo, an Arena League team.
"I was asked if I wouldn't mind doing a little color for one of their first games, and I thought that sounded fun. I enjoyed every minute of it," Jon said. "You get to talk about football and kind of relate to the fans in ways that you're melding two worlds: the football world that you've known and experienced since you were a kid, and then also the pandemonium of it. That's how I was first introduced to the game as a fan, so it provided a unique opportunity."
Matt, 49, played for Georgia from 1995-98 and was a two-time All-American; he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018. He was a first-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 1999 and played in the NFL from 2000-06.
At Georgia, Matt graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree from the Terry College of Business and later graduated from Harvard Business School's Executive Education Business Management & Entrepreneurial Program. When he's not on TV talking football, Matt is a partner with the consulting and brokerage firm Sterling Seacrest Pritchard in metro Atlanta.
Jon, 47, played for the Bulldogs from 1999-2002 and was an All-American in 2002 and was twice voted All-SEC. He was a second-round draft pick in 2003 and played for the New Orleans Saints from 2003-10. Jon started 86 straight games at one point, was selected to the 2009 Pro Bowl, and helped the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV. A former member of the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors, Jon is in the real estate business in the Atlanta area with Virtual Properties Realty.
Along with his brief experience doing a game for the New Orleans Arena League team, Jon has also done more than a dozen Saints preseason game broadcasts. But becoming the new color man for Georgia's radio broadcasts, taking over for former Bulldog lineman Josh Brock, and former Georgia QB Eric Zeier before him, was something special.
"I stand on the shoulders of the giants that came before me," Jon said. "I was able to speak with Zeier when I first took this opportunity, and kind of pick his brain briefly. I have such admiration for Eric and Josh Brock for the jobs they did. ... I understand how what we're doing is interwoven into the fabric of the Georgia fan experience, and I don't take that lightly."
Matt and Jon talk and text often about football, but they haven't discussed broadcasting. And Matt said he didn't offer his brother any advice on doing the job.
"Who am I to give advice? I've just done it, and it wasn't like I got trained, either. And maybe that shows," Matt said. "I'm sure there might be some folks that are like, 'Hey, man, why don't you get some training?' But he didn't ask for advice, and I didn't offer. We don't really ever talk about it."
As the color man on SEC Network, Matt can't have any "we" comments when it comes to calling Georgia games — he has to be an impartial and objective broadcaster. It's a much different situation for Jon.
"When I listen to (Georgia games on the radio), I'm expecting to hear 'we.' You should be a homer, and that's the expectation. The visiting team is not tuning into your broadcast, and if they are, then they should be prepared for some homerism," Matt said. "I listened last week (when Jon made his debut in the season opener against Tennessee State) while I was coming back from the South Carolina game, and I thought they sounded awesome."
Putting on the headphones for his first game in the booth for Georgia, Jon wasn't nervous, he said. Just excited.
"There was just the anticipation of what could be and how it's going to play out, but I prepared well. The background of calling Saints preseason games made me a heck of a lot more comfortable than if it was my first time with a set of headphones and a microphone in front of me."
