ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia fifth-year senior center Drew Bobo and junior linebacker Chris Cole have been included as semifinalists for the Lombardi Award given to the nation's top college linemen and linebackers who embody the discipline, character and excellence of legendary coach Vince Lombardi, according to an announcement Wednesday.
The Bulldog pair make up two of the 12 semifinalists. Seven of the semifinalists hail from the Southeastern Conference.
Bobo, a native of Athens, Ga., is a graduate who is in his second year as Georgia's starting center. The Bulldogs lead the SEC and rank fourth nationally in Scoring Offense at 41.0 points/game behind Bobo and the rest of the offensive line. He has helped QB Gunner Stockton complete 130 passes for 1,671 yards and 16 touchdowns and only be sacked nine times in eight games. Bobo and fellow fifth-year senior Earnest Greene III have anchored a line that also features two sophomores and a freshman.
Cole, a native of Salem, Va., leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and has three sacks to go with his 49 stops. The Butkus Award semifinalist is also tied for the national lead with three recovered fumbles for a Bulldog unit that is limiting teams to just 14.9 points/game. Cole returned one of those fumbles 85 yards for a touchdown during the win over Oklahoma and another 66 yards for a score during the victory over No. 17 Florida in Atlanta.
The No. 2 Bulldogs travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on No. 10 Ole Miss on Saturday. ABC will televise the matchup at 7:30 p.m. ET.
