ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia Athletic Association hosted the Regional Trauma Advisory Committee Sports Medicine Course (RTAC) through the Georgia Trauma Commission last week on the UGA campus.

Over 130 healthcare professionals, including paramedics, emergency medical technicians, nurses, athletic trainers and physicians participated in this year's conference. As part of the lecture/lab format, participants took part in emergency-based scenario training in various UGA facilities.

"This marks the third year of our partnership with RTAC, the Georgia Trauma Commission, and Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in hosting the Emergency Care in Sport Conference," executive associate athletic director for athletic health and performance Ron Courson said. "This event provides a valuable opportunity for collaboration among paramedics, EMTs, nurses, athletic trainers, physicians, and our sports medicine staff, bridging both the local healthcare and academic communities. Conferences like this enhance our knowledge and skills, helping us deliver the highest quality of care when athletic injuries occur."

Members of the Georgia sports medicine staff led the laboratory stations, which included a wide variety of topics like orthopedic splinting, bleeding control, CPR and AED training, log roll, helmet and shoulder pad removal, multi-person lift, spine management in pole vault and cold water immersion.

Georgia's sports medicine team has taken an active role in medical training and care. The group has hosted yearly meetings each July for local healthcare workers prior to start of high school sports seasons and has hosted two Emergency Care in Sport national conferences in conjunction with the National Football League and Piedmont Healthcare.
