ATHENS, Ga. – A late goal in the second half pushed LSU past the 22nd-ranked University of Georgia soccer team, 3-2, on Thursday evening at the Turner Soccer Complex before 1,250 spectators.
Graduate midfielder Croix Bethune made her Bulldog debut and scored her first goal for Georgia (4-2-3, 0-1-1 SEC) within the last minute of the first half. Senior defender Madison Haugen followed Bethune's lead with her first goal of the season. Graduate forward Hannah White led the Bulldog offense with four shots followed by redshirt senior Nicole Vernis with three.
Two other Bulldogs chipped in as Georgia outshot LSU (6-3-1, 1-1-0 SEC) by a 13-8 margin. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown posted one save over the 90 minutes of play.
Georgia controlled possession for a majority of the first half, ripping five shots and forcing LSU keeper Mollee Swift to make a pair of saves. Ten minutes after she made her debut in Athens, the Bulldogs drove down the field, and Bethune connected with a pass from Vernis to put the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0, in the 45th minute.
A back-and-forth effort from both sides to start the second half culminated in the 56th minute as graduate midfielder Mallie McKenzie brought the ball to the edge of the box and sent a pass to Haugen who sent the ball high over Swift to boost Georgia ahead of the Tigers, 2-0.
The Tigers put three goals on the board in the final 20 minutes. A penalty goal in the 74th minute put LSU on the board. LSU balanced the score in the 76th minute as it snuck a goal into the bottom right corner, 2-2.
In the 84th minute, the Tigers congested the box, firing back-to-back shots before a third attempt snuck into the bottom right corner of the goal to give LSU the go-ahead 3-2 win.
The Bulldogs will hit the road this weekend when they travel to Columbia to take on the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 24. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. and can be streamed on SEC Network+.
