Georgia Scores Season-High on Vault, Falls to Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. --- Despite a season-high score on vault, the No. 14 Georgia gymnastics team fell to No. 7 Auburn, 197.550-196.075, on Friday night at Neville Arena.
"We made a lot of mistakes tonight but also had a lot of scores that didn't go our way," head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. "You have to be on every single week in this conference and we were off. We have two more home meets to really get it right and set us up for postseason. I know we're better than this."
Starting on bars, Georgia scored a 49.025. In the anchor position, senior Haley de Jong scored a 9.850. Katie Finnegan and Josie Angeny both swung to scores of 9.825.
The GymDogs shined on vault, collectively scoring a season-high 49.375 in the second rotation. Freshman Naya Howard led the squad with a season-high 9.925. Leading off the event, de Jong also notched a season high 9.900. Soraya Hawthorne received a 9.875 for her Yurchenko 1.5, followed by a 9.850 from Josie Angeny. Both Katie Finnegan and Amanda Cashman scored a 9.825 allowing the GymDogs to drop one.
Continuing on floor, the GymDogs scored a 48.950. Hawthorne and Cashman led the rotation with scores of 9.825.
Finishing on beam, Georgia posted a 48.725 and had to count a fall. Senior Vanessa Deniz scored a 9.900, followed by two 9.850s from Angeny and de Jong.
Georgia is back home next week to conclude SEC competition against Arkansas on Friday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
