GymDogs Finish SEC Championship with 195.800

March 19, 2022 | Gymnastics

Birmingham, Ala.—The University of Georgia gymnastics team finished the Southeastern Conference Championship with a 195.800 on Saturday after competing in the afternoon session with Arkansas, Kentucky, and Missouri.

Georgia finished in fourth of the session behind Missouri (196.875), Arkansas (196.450), and Kentucky (196.350).

"When you fall behind early like we did today it's sometimes hard to gain back momentum," Georgia head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. "I was proud of how we bounced back in our floor rotation. I know they had fun out there and the energy was great. We had some bright spots on vault and bars too. What a routine for Victoria Nguyen on bars. I know we will continue to build from our performance today. This is one of the biggest stages in collegiate gymnastics and an important experience for our team. The SEC puts on a great championship."

Georgia started competition on beam with a 48.425.  Sophomore Victoria Nguyen led the team with a 9.850 for event and junior Soraya Hawthorne followed with a 9.825.

Moving on to floor, the GymDogs earned their highest score of the day with a 49.250.  Senior Rachel Baumann and Hawthorne both finished the rotation with scores of 9.900 for their routines. Megan Roberts added a 9.850 and both Haley de Jong and Mikayla Magee scored a 9.800.

Next on vault the GymDogs scored a 49.025. Baumann led the squad with a 9.850, followed by a 9.825 from Hawthorne and Roberts.

Finishing on bars, Georgia added a 49.100 to the total.  Nguyen scored the highest of the session on bars with a 9.900 from the anchor position for the GymDogs.  De Jong contributed a 9.850 and Roberts swung to a 9.825.

The evening session featuring Florida, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama begins tonight (March 19) at 8:00 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.

The NCAA Selection Show for Regionals is set for Tuesday, March 22 at noon.
