
Georgia Concludes Non-Conference Play with Loss at No. 18 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to 18th-ranked Georgia Tech at O'Keefe Gymnasium Saturday evening to close its non-conference schedule (22-25, 17-25, 12-25).
Georgia (4-7) opens Southeastern Conference play Wednesday at South Carolina. The Bulldogs and Gamecocks will square off in Columbia, S.C. Wednesday's 8 p.m. SEC opener will air on SEC Network.
Junior outside hitter Kacie Evans paced the Bulldogs' offense with seven kills while fellow juniors Amber Stivrins and Meghan Froemming each put up five in the match.
In her first start at libero this season, senior Claire Rothenberger led the squad with six digs. Georgia out blocked the Yellow Jackets 8-7 in the match, led by three from senior Sage Naves.
It was a close opening set to start the match as the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets (9-1) went toe-to-toe. The set featured 16 ties and the lead changed hands four times. Neither team was able to garner a lead of more than a couple points. Down 15-13, Georgia won four of the next five rallies to take a 16-15 lead. The Bulldogs reached the 20-point mark first on an Evans kill, 20-19. Tech used a 4-1 run to take a 23-21 lead late and was able to hold on to take the opening set, 25-22.
The Bulldogs out-hit the Yellow Jackets .345 to .321 to open the match. Georgia tallied half of its total blocks in the opening frame.
The Yellow Jackets used their late momentum from set one to take a commanding lead in the second. Down 18-7, Georgia went on a 6-1 run to slice into the lead and prompt a Tech timeout, 19-13. The deficit was too much to overcome as Tech went on to win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
A 3-1 run early in the third gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead, capped by back-to-back kills from Froemming and Stivrins. The Yellow Jackets regrouped and took five-straight to go ahead. Georgia Tech kept the momentum going ad completed the straight-set win with a 25-12 win in set three.
