October 02, 2021 | Volleyball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Arkansas Saturday evening at Barnhill Arena to open its three-match road stretch (21-25, 22-25, 23-25).

Junior outside hitter Amber Stivrins topped the double-digit mark with 11 kills. Senior Sage Naves contributed seven kills for the Bulldogs.

In her first career start as the Bulldogs' libero, freshman Bailey Cox registered 10 digs. Freshman setter Clara Brower just missed a double-double, finishing with eight digs and 28 assists. Brower also led the team with a pair of service aces. On the net, the Bulldogs put up nine blocks, led by six from sophomore Phoebe Awoleye

Arkansas (11-4, 2-2) came out firing in the match, taking a sizable 13-1 lead on the Bulldogs to begin the contest. Georgia began to chip away at the early deficit. Down 19-8, a 10-1 Bulldog run nearly eliminated the Razorbacks' early lead, cutting it to two, 20-18. Arkansas responded with three-straight to regain a five-point lead and held on to take the set 25-21. Stivrins led the Bulldogs with five kills to open the match.

A pair of Bulldog blocks opened the second set to give Georgia a small lead, one the Bulldogs were able to take hold of and carry into the second set media time, 15-12. With Georgia up 20-16, Arkansas used a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the set, 23-20. The late momentum favored the Razorbacks as they took the set 25-22 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three proved to be a battle, featuring 14 ties and three lead changes. Arkansas managed to pull away by two before Georgia called a timeout, down 13-11. Georgia worked to tie it back up at 14-all before trailing again 17-15. Three-straight Razorback errors gave the Bulldogs an 18-17 lead and Arkansas took a timeout. Three-straight points out of the timeout gave the Razorbacks back the lead, 20-18. The Bulldogs tied it at 20, but Arkansas was able to hold off the Dogs and complete the straight-set victory, 25-23.

The Bulldogs' road swing continues next week with a two-match series at Texas A&M. First serve both Thursday and Friday is set for 8 p.m., ET. Friday's match will air on SEC Network live from Bryan-College Station.
