Defense Leads Georgia Past Missouri 9-6

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 34-yard game-winning field goal from Marshall Morgan with 1:44 remaining in the game pushed the Bulldogs past Mizzou Saturday night at Sanford Stadium in a hard-fought 9-6 defensive battle.

Georgia's senior placekicker scored all nine of his team's points hitting from 29, 24 and ultimately the 34-yard game-winner.

The Bulldogs defense stole the show holding Mizzou to 164 total yards on the game, only allowing 37 yards in the second-half. Georgia's offense put up 298 yards of their own finishing with 178 yards through the air and 120 yards on the ground.

Head coach Mark Richt was pleased with the grit his team showed to prevail with the victory.

"I'll take that everyday," Richt said. "Just so long as there's a victory at the end of it. I'm thankful and happy right now. It's not going to be pretty all the time, but the victory is pretty. The bottom line is everyone kept battling, kept fighting, kept believing. I'm just really proud of the job everybody did. Sometimes the toughest ones are the best ones."

After allowing Mizzou to hit two field goals in the first half, including one on its first drive, Georgia's defense stuffed the Tigers for the entire second-half. The Bulldogs forced Mizzou quarterback Drew Lock to complete 42 percent of his attempt for only 143 yards. The Bulldogs were everywhere in the trenches holding the Tigers to a mere 21-yards rushing as a team.

The second-half belonged to the Bulldogs, with Marshall Morgan scoring near the end of the third and fourth quarters. Georgia's game-winning field goal was set up by a punt return from Terry Godwin to midfield. A steady dose of Sony Michel marched the ball down to the 17-yard line for Marshall to score the game-winner.

Georgia has a bye week next Saturday before returning to action in two weeks with its annual rivalry game vs. Florida in Jacksonville on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
